33+ Electron Vs Molecular Geometry
Image. This gives a molecule a particular shape. The geometry of a molecule can be given as either the electron geometry or the molecular geometry.
I have no problem with the electron region geometry but always confuse those other ones. Why do we ignore the lone pair for naming the molecular geometry? What are bonding pairs of electrons and what are lone pairs?
For methane (ch4), it is tetrahedral and for ammonia (nh3), it is trigonal pyramidal.
The 4 domains means tetrahedral electron geometry, just like in methane but because there are only 3 atoms attached we call the molecular shape trigonal so it still has tetrahedral electron geometry. The bonding of so2 without making assumptions can be shown below. Even though there are many similarities between the electron and molecular geometry, there are some key differences. Describe the relationship between molecular geometry and electron domain geometry.
